| GDA as a Non Partisan organization looks forward to providing the means for our citizens to hear and discuss issues that effect our community as well as our sister communities within our district. |
|
What have we done? |
| Fair Share Mantra - Gathered information to know the taxes paid by this community in order to determine if we are receiving the attention we deserve for our parks, roads and schools. This data was crucial in the UDAT development. |
| Section 8 - Based on Fannie Mae study we continue to track the subsidies in our community and continue to question the concentration in Old Dundalk, St. Helena and Turners Station. These three communities are within walking distance of each other and house over 50% of the district’s subsidies. |
| Redistricting Issue - We sponsored a forum to educate the community on the law and our rights to question the proposed division of our community. We fought and won this! |
| Election Education - We held forum’s for the community to see and hear the candidates for Delegate, Central Committees, County Executive and Councilman. |
| Toxic Dredge in Sollers Point - We fought to have Sollers Point removed as a site to receive placement of toxic dredge materials form the Harbor. We continue to participate In meetings with the Port Authority, The Harbor Team [Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and Baltimore County] and the County’s Harbor Team. We were also successful in having the team report to the Governor include as a requirement the development of a program for innovative treatment and reuse of dredge materials. Hopefully in the future the need to build dike containment for toxic materials will end. |
| CCBC Dundalk - We fought the placement of senior housing on the campus. We established an education committee and met with the Chancellor to discuss our concerns relative to the continued life of the campus and the courses provided. We stressed the importance of this campus to our community. We addressed our concerns in the meeting with the Baltimore County Financial Delegation regarding this campus and spending issues affecting the college and its staff. |
| Education - We contacted Superintendent Hairston, regarding the need for stiffer disciplinary procedures, due to student bullying and general misbehavior. Dundalk HS now has a new code. We also pressed for an additional SRO for the campus. |
| Detention Center proposed for Sollers Point - We initiated an email, letter and phone campaign to stop this location from being selected as a site by the Federal Government. |
| Crime -We meet monthly with the police department and our Councilman Olszewski on issues affecting this area. We are forming a Drug Task Force to work with the Police. |
| Communities - We work with communities that do not have an association to pursue code enforcement and crime issues. |
|
We have worked with the Dunshire community to address their issues, to get the County involved and also to set them on a path for legal council on their issues. We have encouraged Boston Courts and the Councilman to deal with the issues related to incomplete work by the developer. We have attended community meetings on specific issues- Dundalk Farms, Stansbury developmental meetings. We have scheduled meetings with the county and Chamber of commerce, Women’s Club, Community Association President’s and the GDA. |
|
Development -We continue to seek developers for our community. We pushed for the establishment of the Dundalk Renaissance Corporation. We supported the proposed developments for the Peninsula [John Riehl’s Lakes at Stansbury Shore] Kevin Carney’s waterfront development plans which are still in review process stage. JJ Clark’s plan with his commitment of no subsidized tenants. Our latest development Group is Dundalk Heritage Development, LLC for the Seagrams site. This will be an upscale condo community with some commercial; interest has also been expressed to this developer for upscale restaurant on site. We are excited because their development does not impact the ball fields as prior ideas by developers did. Call 410-887-7174 or write Councilman Olszewski Requesting site designation now so project can begin. Yes, citizen input is part of the commitment by Bob Ward and Mike Campbell. |
| The Yorkway corridor is hopefully going to change. This is by far the oldest issue and the most frustrating. The Shopping Center uptown has a potential buyer and it appears the Harwoods are willing to sell. We brought Patrick Turner to our community over four years ago to pursue the center but the Harwoods would not budge. |
| Social programs - We have pursued getting these relocated away from our town center and residential areas. After over two years the county is finally moving to on this issue. |
| The Crisis Center however will remain here. Many feel it has been here long enough after 27 years another community should shoulder this exposure. The other shelters listed in the county are Acts,Inc facilities Martha’s Place and Harriet’s House[825-8773] and another run by the Jewish Charities[234-0023]. |
| Accountability - We expect this from our political representation as well as the employees of county government. |
| Transit Issues - We met with the MTA at John Olszewski's office last year (2004) to talk about bus issues in Old Dundalk. We stressed that we would like fewer bus stops and smaller buses. The issues of mountains of trash at bus stops and hours of operation were brought up as well. We see no reason that buses need to run 24 hours per day. We will continue to pursue these issues. |
